Option #7: participation in scholarship programs designed to assist students interested in pursuing a career in broadcasting; KIRN participated in Southern California Broadcasters Association (SCBA) Scholarship Program 2011. The SCBA Scholarship Fund, included the Stan Spero Radio Broadcasting Award (California State University Fullerton); George Nicholaw Radio Broadcasting Award Pasadena College; and Ben Hoberman Radio Broadcasting Award California State University Los Angeles. They gave out one scholarship in 2011 for California State University, Fullerton and Pasadena City College. California State University Los Angeles did not meet the deadlines set by the California Community Foundation who handles fund so there was no winner for 2011. SCBA Scholarship Program qualify stations as long as they participate in any of these: participate in evaluation opportunities and help determine the form of outreach to be used each year, participate in committees evaluating the scholarship program and contribute recommendations for their improvement or redesign, promote broader institutional reach of the scholarship program; offer to meet with or provide station tours to scholarship winners. For the above scholarships preference was given to students majoring in Radio Broadcast Communications. Selection was not based solely on GPA, but also was based on other factors, such as commitment to and promise in broadcasting, service to the school and community, or other criteria that the faculty or scholarship committee considered appropriate. John Paley was part of the committee’s decision-making process and voted on selection of the scholarship winner and invited the winner to visit KIRN station, provide a station tour, and discuss how else KIRN station can assist with the winner’s career goals. SCBA was asked to make the arrangement for the winner to set up the meeting with John Paley GM of KIRN 670am.
